My ongoing series, "Foot Follows Shades," began in 2023 as a tactile meditation on the relationship between humanity and the earth.
The series is built from hand-collected and processed clay from across the United States (TN, SC, NC, VA, DC, MD, PA, DE, NJ, NY, CT, MA, VT, IL, MT, and ND), creating a physical record of specific places through natural pigments.
The process is rooted in a deliberate, performative act: as a woman of Asian descent. I assert my agency by digging into American soil. This physical labor—often considered masculine—is an expression of authenticity. This work serves as a meditation on ownership, belonging, and intersection of natural and human-shaped time.
